A Russian military "adviser" was shot dead by a sniper in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday, without specifying the location or date.

The Defense Ministry said the soldier was named "Alexei Pochelnikov", and was in Syria within the group of Russian military advisers, which is entrusted with training units of artillery belonging to the Syrian army.

Moscow does not recognize the existence of Russian fighters in Syria, and says they are military advisers and trainers.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced last month the killing of a Russian officer in Syria, a military adviser to the forces of the Syrian regime, and said that "the officer was killed after a confrontation with some militants" in the training area, without specifying the location or more details.

The news agency "Reuters" in a previous investigation reported the death toll of Russian soldiers is much higher than what is announced.
