President of the Good Party and presidential candidate Miral Akşener revealed on Monday the details of an offer made by incumbent Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Akşener said that Erodgan asked Metin Külünk, an MP for Istanbul, to mediate between them [and] to make  Akşener accept the role of Deputy Prime Minister, according to the website Turk Press.

Akşener added that she refused to accept this offer and that she will not participate in any alliance that combines the Justice and Development Party (AK) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), describing the alliance between these two parties – known as the ‘People’s Alliance’ – as a “forced marriage”.

It is known that competition between political candidates becomes more intense as the date of the presidential elections becomes closer, and that the exchange of accusations and rumours in attempt to win the largest number of votes [is commonplace during this time].

Miral Akşener, born in 1956, is a Turkish politician. She previously served as interior minister and as deputy speaker ofparliament. She also co-founded the AK Party, before leaving and subsequently joining the MHP in 2016.

Akşener led an opposition group within the MHP against its leader Devlet Bahçeli and thereafter set out to establish the Good Party, becoming its leader and announcing her candidacy in the upcoming Turkish presidential elections against President Erdogan.
