On Monday, Abdulhamit Gül, the Turkish Minister of Justice, made important statements about the return of Syrian refugees to their country.

According to the news agency Anatolia, Gül explained that the situation in Syria is more secure on the ground following operations Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch, and that many refugees [now] want to return home.

He pointed out that more than 40 to 50 thousand Syrians returned to their country last Eid, with several returning to Turkey afterwards, noting that many of [these people] have received official permits from Turkish crossings to spend Eid in Syria this year as well.

The minister continued: “But this year it is different. The more secure the situation, the greater the likelihood that those who go on holiday will stay in their country," he said.

It is noteworthy that the Turkish military and Free Syrian Army have conducted extensive clearing operations on the ground, including through operation Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch, against the Islamic State group. This has allowed many Syrian refugees and their families from the Aleppo countryside – and the cities of al-Bab and Jarabulus – to return home.
