Iraqi Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said on Tuesday he had asked Bashar al-Assad to step down so as not to take the fate of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and "to preserve the reputation of resistance."

"I find it fair that President Bashar al-Assad resigns to spare the country more war and end the suffering of the Syrian people”, which prompted angry reactions from the Syrian president and his supporters, for what al-Sadr said in a statement on Saturday.

Al-Sadr reiterated yesterday his call, saying: "but asked Assad to step down in order to preserve the reputation of the resistance; so as not to get the fate of Gaddafi’s and others."

Al-Sadr stressed that "Bashar and his departure is a reference to the Syrian peace-loving people, but I find this a suitable solution to end the suffering of the people who still suffer the injustice of occupation and terrorism, and the Syrian people deserve only safety, peace and prosperity."

Muqtada al-Sadr is an Iraqi Shiite leader who is a follower of Iran in Iraq. He has a political stance opposed to the current Iraqi government and occasionally launches anti-US statements demanding them to leave Iraq.
