US Treasury Secretary Steve Menuchin has announced that the United States will impose additional economic sanctions against Assad's regime in the near future after a rocket attack against al-Shaerat airbase in Homs.

The move comes as part of the US response to Assad's attack with chemical weapons against Khan Sheikhan in Idlib, where the United States held Assad the direct responsibility for the incident.

"We expect the sanctions to continue and to have an important impact in preventing others from entering into business dealings with them," Menuchin said on Friday, describing them as "very important" and his country would use them "to maximize impact."

US Ambassador to the UN Security Council Nicky Hailey has confirmed Washington's readiness for further strikes if Assad did not commit to ban the use of chemical weapons.
