Spokeswoman for the Syrian Democratic militia, "Ceyhan Sheikh Ahmed," announced that the forces composed of Kurdish and Arab factions backed by the United States has reached the entrance to the Euphrates dam in rural Raqqa, according to Reuters news agency.

Kurdish and Arab media sources confirmed that Syria's Democratic militias, backed by French and American forces, reached the entrance of the Euphrates dam, "dam of al-Tabqa" after battles against IS organization, preceded by an air landing that achieved its objectives.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Duran, whose country is part of the US-led coalition, said it's likely to begin a battle to restore Raqqa in the coming days, without giving further details.

The Euphrates dam is the largest dam on the river, extends for four kilometers and is located in the town of al-tabqa, about 40 km to the west of al-Raqqa city.
