US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Washington would create "temporary safe areas" for displaced people in Iraq and Syria through a ceasefire in both countries.

"The United States will increase its pressure against IS and al-Qaeda organizations and will create temporary safe areas through a ceasefire to allow refugees to return to their homes," Tillerson said in a speech at a meeting in Washington of representatives of 68 member states of the International Alliance Against IS organization.

The US official did not say how to achieve this, but his statement undermines previous analyzes and expectations about the Trump administration's seriousness in changing US policy in Syria, implying that Trump's announcement of the safe areas is not new.

Trump, who took office on January 20, announced his intention to establish safe areas in Syria that civilians could use to alleviate their suffering.
