Local media sources loyal to the al-Assad regime reported that each of Maher al-Assad ,Bashar al-Assad's brother and Sohail al-Hassan ,who is a military commander in the al-Assad's forces and the officer in the Air Force Intelligence have got higher military ranks.

The sources added that Bashar al-Assad issued a decree promoted his brother the brigadier-general Maher al-Assad to be in the rank of Major General and Colonel Suhail al-Hassan, who was a brigadier to be a brigadier-general, with no comments by official sources in the Assad regime about this news.

No one knows any senior field role for Maher al-Assad, while Sohail al-Hassan led several ground campaigns, most notably the opening and securing the desert road between Hama and Aleppo, paving the way for the al-Assad's forces after they were besieged by the Syrian resistance factions, then he had a Medal of honor from the Russians, as he formed several groups of national defense in Syria, known as "Shabiha."
